Upcoming plans

Having anxiety fucking sucks and I wish it didn’t keep me up all night. To try tire myself out, I thought I’d go over some of my upcoming plans.

I’ve been working on and researching the MLS salary cap, down to its minor detail, and this is something I will continue to study. The intricacies are certainly interesting to me, as teams jostle to improve.

The MLS as a whole is something I wish to become accustomed to. I’d like to cover it in the future, particularly if completing a masters in the U.S materialises, as is my dream. MLS league pass is certainly an option.

I also have an idea for an article regarding the Houston Rockets, which will hit on a point I’m yet to see written about, but really intrigues me. However, as an off-season piece there is no rush. It is something I really want to get right after conducting thorough research.

The piece will likely be similar form to my earlier article about the San Antonio Spurs. The piece in-fact did pretty well on the Medium platform and is one of my proudest to date. I have been toying with the idea of linking my Medium account to my personal account, my confidence is certainly growing.

Despite being an obsessive fan who is constantly using different outlets to understand better the details of the on court game, I accept basketball is not a sport I grew up playing. As a result, I would never pretend to know more about the game itself than I do. My NBA pieces, whilst less frequent, will tend to be bigger picture stories, surveying the landscape of the league and it’s subplots. As a sport that came fairly foreign as a child, I have loved the experience being an NBA fan has provided.

Finally, with the Premier League creeping round the corner, I will look to power through some more off-season previews. I am still experimenting with this style of writing, with both big picture and more tactical single game analysis being my strengths at this moment.

Upgrades pending!

Quick little update. I will be upgrading my WordPress blog to premium after Christmas. Among other things this will allow me to share videos which will be particularly useful for my music related posts. As far as journalism goes, I will also be upgrading the scouting software I use, allowing me to share clips of pieces of play I feel will compliment the piece. There is a current piece I am working on regarding a young English footballer. Unfortuanately, as much as i would love to get stuck in to the hectic Christmas football schedule, I have a busy schedule of my own with 6 exams forthcoming in January! So if there is a sudden explosion of articles at once after weeks without post, that explains why!

About Me & What This Is!

Welcome to Six Of One

I am a Mathematics student in my final year at Newcastle University. However, my ambition strangely enough is to become a sports writer. At the time of starting this blog I have essentially no experience of writing, whether that be about sports or anything else. Therefore from a personal point of view I will be using this blog to explore different writing techniques, different topics of interests and investigating different analytic tools. I also intend to gain work experience and apply to enrol on a journalism degree in the future, so we will see where this blog leads to!

I played tennis, cricket and football to a reasonably good regional and national level as school boy, but I grew up in a football culture and a footballing family, so football is where I intend to focus my efforts on and specialise and will be the main subject of this blog. However, I will try to drop bits and pieces from various other sports and pieces that take my interest!

From the outset, I am expecting myself to try to take techniques from American reporting. I am an avid listener to podcasts following the NFL and NBA. I want to compare and contrast their culture, particularly in terms of league parity and youth development. I also intend to learn from their in depth analysis techniques and explore the use and relevance of statistics. In America they seem to take a lot more quotes and opinions from league insiders so the potential to carry that over to British football interests me!

Despite this, my opinion of American sports journalism is not all positive, I am a big critic of the hot take culture over there, but I intend to understand that side of it a little better. Clicks sell!

I am initially expecting my main topics of interest written about to be player analysis, youth development, football culture and mental health in sports! I think my writing will be an “x’s and o’s” style of investigations.

I originally ran a Blogspot but have since moved to WordPress and hope to take it further. As I begin to personalise the blog, I may introduce a smaller, more casual music section. My main genres of interest are House, Disco, Acid and Techno. I also intend to add travelling photos!

If all goes well the goal is to move to a professional blog site and set up a mail bag theme! (The long term goal would be to set up my own website and run a podcast).

So, hopefully this wasn’t too long a read and explains what this is all about. Welcome to Six of One!
